Notes: * Disc 2 Bonus tracks are from Maple Leaf Garden, Toronto, Ontario, Canada - September 4th, 1971. The bulk of High Heeled Sneakers on Godfather Records in the popular Hampton Virgina tape from Zeppelin’s seventh tour. Beginning with its appearance on One More Daze (DS92D046) on Dynamite which contains “Immigrant Song” to “That’s The Way” and its full release in 1996 on Tarantura’s Jim’s Picks (HAMP-1,2) to last year’s Hampton Roads Coliseum 1971 (Scorpio LZ-08019), there have been a myriad of different editions. The sound quality between all these titles is so similar that to single out one release as “definitive” really borders on being too pedantic. High Heeled Sneakers does sound very nice with a touch more bottom end that the older releases giving the flat sounding tape more liveliness. - bostonbro -.<-(Info taken from original info file).

Notes: This title from EV is a 6CD set, the first three of which largely feature the now familiar soundboard recording, and the remaining three of which entirely feature the newly surfaced audience recording. There is nothing wrong with this title itself. The soundboard as featured in the title is actually an upgrade over that featured in the past titles, since it especially has nice fatter bottom ends. On the other hand, the audience recording is truly a wonderful newly find! It is very dynamic and atmospheric and is thus generally more enjoyable than the soundboard which, as upgraded, is still somewhat thin and dry. The audience tape should, and I’m sure will, be an essential item for any serious collector. On the front of the package of the title, a rare color picture of all the four members of the band standing in casual styles on the Bourbon Street is printed, which adds some value for our collection (, although it looks like a shot in ’77 rather than in ’73). On the inner sides of the package, there printed are two black & white pictures of Jimmy on stage, both of which look standard in terms of his postures and attires on the '73 U.S. tour but may be rare.

However, when I compare this EV title with Winston Remasters' recent matrix title called “New Orleans May 14th 1973”, it has become difficult to assess its real value. On Disc 1, EV filled the beginning of the show (up to the start of Jimmy's guitar solo in "Rock And Roll") with the audience tape, just like WR did, because it is missing in the soundboard.

The quality of the soundboard is not very different as between the two titles. Actually, WR title has less hiss noises than EV's. As the color pictures of what seem to be the master cassette tapes are shown on the back cover of the EV title, I suppose that it is true that EV used the master tapes in producing its audience tape version. However, the quality of the audience tape is again not very different as between the two titles. Rather, EV's version has more noticeable hiss noises than WR's, especially because EV amplified the audio. (In addition, WR seems to have made some noise reduction efforts artificially, without muffling the sound very much.) Unlike WR, however, EV did not dare to fill the apparent gap which exists in the audience tape close to the end of "The Rain Song" (probably due to the tape change).

Overall, therefore, some people, like myself, may feel more comfortable and enjoyable when they listen to cleaner WR's title rather than EV's. However, it would not be bad to have the pressed CD versions of the upgraded soundboard and the newly surfaced wonderful audience recording, with this title from EV marketed with the nice package. - Review By Takemi Hiramatsu.<-(Info taken from original info file).

Notes: Sources: (Disc 1,2&3) stereo audience; (Disc 4&5) two stereo audiences; (Disc 6) two stereo audiences; (Disc 7,8&9) stereo audience

This is probably the only show in the Led Zeppelin collection that is better known for a visual than the music. Led Zeppelin, the band, were always proud that no matter how outrageous their behavior, the attention, or anything else, the music was always center stage. Not tonight.

This show is most famous, and mostly discussed, as "the night Jimmy Page wore the Stormtrooper costume." And that's a shame. This is a really great show. Led Zeppelin had been to Chicago before, and had never really turned in a great performance there for several reasons, including Plant's case of the flu (1970?) and Jimmy's broken finger (1973?) - Led Zeppelin felt they owed Chicago one, even though Jimmy wasn't feeling well on this night either, whether from sickness or stoned-ness. And Chicago got a whale of a show. The setlist is tremendous, and the performance inspired, with classics like Ten Years Gone and Achilles Last Stand dominating the very long set.

This set is recommended to the die-hard Zeppelin collectors only. The average collector would consider this a bit of a rough ride. Until new sources or soundboards surface from these nights, this will probably be the definitive and maybe only updated release of these shows. Considering the source tapes; a nice job and an excellent presentation.

Passing along this nice piece of history. Thanks to the person I got it from.

tracks 1-8 April 1967 Stockholm - This is a mono soundboard recording very clear and balanced.
Probably from a flawless vinyl (only very few pops are present at the very beginning of the recording).

tracks 9-11 1966 Unknown Location - This is an FM mono recording clear but with audience noise.
Probably from a vinyl (some pops are present here and there)

Deep Throat on Empress Valley is the second attempt to present a boxset of all three shows together. Tarantura made the first set called Get Back To L.A. in the mid-nineties. It is packaged in a gorgeous accordion still package and at the time was definitive. But since better generations of these tapes have surfaced.

Deep Throat was originally announced in 1999 but delayed until 2000 and was available finally in 2003. The first edition came in a box silver box with a tour program and sold out quickly and commanding high prices when it does surface. This edition is a reprint released for Christmas 2008.

Unlike the first edition, the second edition is packaged more simply in three gatefold sleeves which are stored in a slip cover. Given Empress Valley’s careful mastering of the Millard tapes and their editing of alternate tape sources to fix the gaps, this remains one of their best creations and are certainly the definitive editions of the LA concerts. The tapes have never sounded as good
